Structure of the community

In order to support the participation of all of the interested parties in Ecohealth, we have opted for a flexible nodal structure created with the following vision:

  • to build the community’s foundation with the support of the three initiating university’s expertise on the Ecohealth approach; an expertise that hinges on research projects, education, and development work with Latin American, African and Asian partners;
  • to support the progressive development of the community of practice through the participation of colleagues, partners and collaborators interested in the ecosystem approach to health;
  • to support the development of regional groups and sustainable studies that aim to inform research, education and public policy about the contributions and ideas that result from ecosystem approaches to health.

The diagram above illustrates the planned structure for the Community of Practice. In the centre of the diagram is the COPEH core committee that is made up of the members of the three universities that initiated the project. This core committee is linked to three regional committees (or regional nodes), which are comprised of regional members that are involved in national and international research activities, interventions or training based on the Ecohealth approach.

The coordinating group is made up researchers who initiated the project:

Primary Researchers:

  • Bruce Hunter
    University of Guelph, Department of Pathobiology
  • Margot Parkes
    University of British Columbia, Department of Family Practice, Faculty of Medicine, College of Health Disciplines, Center for International Health in conjunction with the Global Health Research Program
  • Johanne Saint-Charles
    Université du Québec à Montréal, Centre de recherche interdisciplinaire sur la biologie, la santé, la société et l’environnement (CINBIOSE), Département de communication sociale et publique
  • Robert Woollard

    University of Guelph, Department of Philosophy
  • Marc Lucottte

  • Donna Mergler
    Université du Québec à Montréal, Centre de recherche interdisciplinaire sur la biologie, la santé, la société et lʹenvironnement (CINBIOSE)
  • Jerry Spiegel
    University of British Columbia, College of Health Disciplines, Center for International Health in conjunction with the Global Health Research Program, Department of Health Care and Epidemiology
  • Céline Surette
    Université de Moncton, Département de chimie et biochimie

    University of Guelph, Department of Population Medicine/ Center for Public Health and Zoonoses
  • Annalee Yassi
    University of British Columbia, College of Health Disciplines, Center for International Health in conjunction with the Global Health Research Program, Department of Health Care and Epidemiology

The principal functions of the coordinating group are:

  • to stimulate participation in the community of practice;
  • to conceive and plan the training offered by the community;
  • to manage the Ecohealth awards program for the community;
  • to make decisions that affect the global management of the CoPEH-Can;
  • to update the website;
  • to provide support to the nodes;
  • to plan annual activities of the community (at national level);
  • to maintain contacts with other networks and organizations.

Each node has a mandate to build a larger community by contacting groups and individuals in their region that are interested in the Ecohealth approach and to set up regional activities that answer to the needs of the participants, as well as supporting exchanges of information across and between Canadian parties and international partners.

To participate

Researchers, decision makers, local networks, and organizations working on topics related to environment, public health, and sustainable development are invited to participate

The activities of each node will be announced soon on the website. Until then, if you wish to participate do not hesitate to communicate with the node in your region:
